# Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw: which open-source AI agent should you use?

Short version: **OpenClaw is the better default for a self-hosted multi-channel agent gateway. Hermes Agent is the better default for one persistent personal ops agent in terminal and Telegram.**

If you want channel breadth, gateway controls, browser automation, cron jobs and explicit infrastructure policy, start with OpenClaw. If you want one assistant that learns your workflow, reuses skills, writes notes to memory and handles recurring personal work, start with Hermes.

The risk is noise. If every session writes every tiny fact, memory becomes a second chat transcript. Hermes feels stronger when paired with a retrieval layer like GBrain: small profile memory for stable preferences, skills for repeatable workflows, and project/source-pack knowledge outside the active prompt.

That is the pattern I trust more:

- **small profile memory** for stable preferences and environment facts;
- **skills** for repeatable procedures;
- **project docs / GBrain / markdown vault** for durable knowledge;
- **cron output** for recurring checks.

The mistake is thinking bigger context solves memory. Bigger context postpones curation.

### Telegram: not just a connected bot

Both systems can work with Telegram. The useful question is what happens after the bot replies once.

OpenClaw is better if Telegram is one channel inside a broader gateway: DM policy, group behavior, pairing, privacy mode, allowlists and token handling all matter. Hermes is better if Telegram is the main control surface for one trusted operator:

- check this repo and summarize the risk;
- run the content loop and report what changed;
- watch this source and alert only on meaningful changes;
- turn messy research into a source pack;
- remind me weekly with current data, not a static note.

For my own use, one reliable Telegram operator beats ten half-configured channels.

The compounding loop is the product:

4. if the skill is wrong, it gets patched.

OpenClaw has AgentSkills-compatible skill folders and strong gateway automation. Hermes pushes more naturally toward personal workflow reuse. Compare day-30 behavior, not day-1 feature count.

### Browser automation

Browser automation is where a lot of AI-agent hype dies.

The agent can click, then it hits CAPTCHA, 2FA, an iframe, a stale DOM state or the wrong browser profile. A separate agent browser profile is safer than giving an assistant your real browser with all cookies and extensions.

The best browser agent is the one with a clean handoff loop:

- agent tries;
- agent detects a manual blocker;
- human takes over safely;
- agent resumes with a fresh observation;
- result is logged in a way you can audit.

This matters more than whether the demo can click a button on a clean website.

### Cron and autonomy

Scheduled tasks and standing orders are where an assistant stops being a chatbot and becomes background infrastructure.

A scheduled agent can spend money, touch files, call APIs, message people, and silently degrade when a provider changes behavior. My default rule: deterministic watchdogs should be scripts, not LLM calls. Let code collect health, disk, index and status data. Use the agent when synthesis is useful.

- agent summarizes only if reasoning is useful;

The minimum serious checklist:

- never expose tokens, bot keys or cookies;
- avoid public gateway exposure unless you understand the auth model;
- keep dangerous tools behind approvals;
- separate personal browser profiles from agent browser profiles;
- log important actions;
- use PR review for code changes;
- avoid broad filesystem access for public or group-facing assistants;

Provider risk belongs in the same bucket. People move between Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw-style setups, Hermes and local models because of limits, bans, pricing, API friction and regional availability. Design for survivability:

- Do not choose by GitHub stars. At the time I checked on May 27, 2026, the GitHub API reported 374,995 stars for `openclaw/openclaw` and 169,652 stars for `NousResearch/hermes-agent`. Useful market signal, not proof.
- Do not choose by viral threads. They are good for demand and vocabulary, bad for your actual workflow.
- Do not choose by "supports Telegram". A connected bot is not an assistant.
- Do not choose by "has memory". Memory without curation becomes context trash.

## My current recommendation

### Pick Hermes Agent if you want a personal AI operating loop

Hermes is the one I would use for:

- Telegram-first personal assistant;
- repo/code/content workflows;
- scheduled research and monitoring;
- skills that accumulate over time;
- GBrain-backed source packs and project memory;
- one agent that learns your preferences and environment;
- “do this and report back” work from your phone.

The value is not one feature. The value is that the assistant becomes part of your day.

### Pick OpenClaw if you want to operate an agent gateway

OpenClaw is the one I would test for:

- many messaging channels;
- local-first assistant architecture;
- explicit channel/gateway/security configuration;
- browser-control experiments;
- cron/standing-order workflows;
- transparent file-based memory;
- production-ish assistant infrastructure where you want to tune every boundary.

The value is control and breadth. The cost is that you are operating more system.
